10 things you would want to invest in for a healthy body and mind.


In this busy world, we often neglect our health and proper state of mind. We drift away with tons of workload from schools, colleges and offices. When our life runs amok, we often end up asking, where did I go wrong? Even the major problems in your life might have been caused because of the slightest negligence, which you can never figure out until you look closely. Here is my list of 10 things you might invest in for a healthy body and mind.

Ergonomic Chair. Our jobs are becoming more sedentary with the coming of time. So, most of the readers must agree with me on the importance of a good chair that makes you sit comfortably. A good ergonomic chair will help reduce the pressure on the hips, have better lumbar support which prevents back pains that may result from prolonged sitting, supports neck area, supports keeping good posture and reduces anterior pelvic tilt. Next time, anyone laughs at your weird walking style, blame your old chair. Check these things in a good chair: good lumbar support, Adjustability, wheelbase and breathable cloth fabric. Or, (bonus) try to sit cross-legged.

 


Memory Pillow. The quality of your sleep heavily depends on the type of pillow you use. Memory pillow has been on the trending list for the last few years and it deserves the spotlight too. Memory foam keeps the body aligned and also supports the neck by allowing the foam to fill in the gap between shoulder and mattress, even when sleeping on the side. A good pillow will always try to maintain the proper alignment of the spine, must be appropriate in weight and hardness, and be comfortable. It is advisable to change your pillow after 2-3 years of time and make sure your head is aligned in-between 20-30º from the bed. Keeping your head aligned helps you to breathe easily and reduces sleep apnoea and snoring.


Desk Lamp. Whether you’re on your desk in the morning or in the evening, it is recommended to use a desk lamp during reading, writing or using your computer screen. A desk lamp will help reduce eye strain considerably, help you to focus more on the work and effectively lighten your mood. A desk lamp with moderately soft lighting and color temperature around ~2700K to 4500K, i.e. white LED lamps, is advisable.


Electric Toothbrush and Dental Floss (Pick). Investing in these two will give you a long-term return, most noticeably in the latter half of your life. Electric brushes are highly recommended by dentists nowadays and No! It’s not for lazy people. Electric brushes can clean plague better than manual ones, reduces erosions of teeth because of vigorous rubbing with manual toothbrushes, goes soft on sensitive teeth and helps you brush evenly on every surface of your teeth. Dental floss helps to clean dirt that are stuck in-between the teeth and also prevents gingivitis. It is recommended to buy toothbrushes with 3 D.O.F. of oscillation and with a high oscillation rate and always buy floss with synthetic strings and some medicinal benefits added to it. Dental floss pick is easier to use and are more convenient.


Computer Glasses. Haven’t you yet suffered from headaches, dry eyes, red eyes and fatigue after prolonged use of screens? Computer glasses are the perfect solution for those who can’t help putting themselves away from the screen for a minute. Computer glasses reduce screen glares drastically, reduces eye strain considerably, prevent you from continuously staring at the screen and also comes with a blue light filter preparing you for a good night’s sleep. Although, screens are not proven to cause any long-term damage to the eyes (actually it helps in improving your sight) but screens might cause other problems which might disrupt your overall balance and well-being if not used with precautions.  


Protein Supplement. In a survey conducted, it was found that 68% of Indians are protein deficient out of which 85% are vegetarians and 65% are non-vegetarians. It is advisable to consume 56-91 gm of protein for men and 46-75 gm for women. So clearly, we can see that protein supplements become very necessary to be added into our budget to lead a healthy and balanced life. Upon comparison, we find that it is cheaper to take protein powders of mid-range prices than to complete the daily quota via food, especially for gym-goers. Proper protein intake allows you to manage your body weight, helps in muscle retention, reduces blood pressures, reduces inflammations and many more health benefits. Protein powders with a blend of all types of protein are usually recommended.


Meditation App. Meditation has many benefits and you can think of practicing it daily for a minimum of 10 minutes. Stress reduction, anxiety reduction, reduction in overthinking, lengthening of attention span, improving sleep quality are the primary fruits meditating daily bears to you. It also helps control pain, fight addiction and provides many physical benefits. If your life is going unorganized, a meditation app is what you’re missing. Although meditation can be done with no app, a voice guiding you through the sessions at the beginning of your course is highly advisable. Start using the most affordable apps with the maximum facilities.


Massage Therapy. Going for a full body massage therapy once in a month or two will help you relax from all the stress accumulated within the period, reduce muscle tension, stimulate the lymphatic system, reduce the stress hormone, improve skin tone and much more. Plus, what’s greater than ending your most hectic month with a nice massage and steam bath to rejuvenate your body and mind.


Books. Oh! Don’t you think books don’t fit in the list? Well, reading books for 30 minutes has been proven to reduce blood pressure, heart rate and mental stress just as effectively as humor and yoga. It also helps in falling asleep faster, helps alleviate depression symptoms and might also help you live longer. So, take a book, any book, preferably not eBooks, and start reading, if you aren’t.


Gym Subscription. I think this is one of the most important things you should consider investing in. No! Not at your home. Join the gym in your neighborhood. It’s not just about staying fit and healthy, but it also shows how much of time you can invest for yourself. Along with the physical advantages, going to the communal gym helps reduce your anxiety and keeps your hormones in control, than doing the gym at home. It also keeps your mind fresh and active and might help you build a few social etiquettes like discipline, respect, patience, punctuality and orderliness.  “Today as always, men fall into two groups: slaves and free men. The last four things on my list need more investment regarding time rather than in money. If you don’t have time to take care of yourself, then nothing will be helpful. No gadgets or devices will keep you on the right track of life. In the end, if you don’t invest some time in yourself then all your lifetimes, hard work becomes futile.
